Maps Treasure Hunt provides an innovative visualization of historical and contemporary cartography by overlaying vintage maps onto current street or satellite imagery. This functionality is achieved through precise georeferencing of old maps, which are available as in-app purchases. The collection includes public domain Sanborn fire insurance maps as well as other archival atlas maps.

Utilizing your device’s GPS capabilities, the application allows users to identify their location in relation to both the present-day map and the historical overlays, either separately or simultaneously. This feature facilitates locating structures that existed centuries ago and can aid in archaeological and artifact recovery efforts.

The app proves particularly valuable in identifying historical sites, especially former buildings that have since been demolished. Due to the high level of detail in some maps, download times may be substantial; therefore, it is advisable to pre-download the mobile version in advance of fieldwork.
